This country must do a better job of preparing its students with skills of math, science, engineering, and technology so that we can continue to be the world leader in innovation.

This week, I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues in unveiling an agenda that I believe will reinvigorate economic growth and innovation in our country. Among its goals are educating 100,000 new scientists, mathematicians, and engineers; increasing our national commitment to research and development; providing affordable broadband internet access to all Americans; achieving energy independence; and supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses. For America to remain the world leader in developing innovative products and technologies, we must commit to meeting the challenges of rapidly developing nations like India and China.

I was pleased to participate in the drafting of this agenda with input from a broad range of New Jersey business leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and employees. The goals and proposals in it reflect and are consistent with our regional economic development initiative, Einstein's Alley. Scientists have discovered that placental and umbilical cord blood holds great promise in its ability to provide a rich supply of stem cells for the ground-breaking research being done in this field.

Too often, people are unaware of the potential this donation has for the advancement of this science. As a result, these valuable fluids are often discarded as medical waste after childbirth. To change this trend, Codey also announced an educational campaign to be conducted by the Department of Health and Senior Services which will inform OB-GYNs, hospitals and other health care professionals about donation opportunities. They, in turn, will pass this information on to their patients.

This month also marked the announcement of the findings of a study prepared by Rutgers University that outlines the potential economic benefits from New Jersey's proposed stem cell research initiative.

According to the report's findings, New Jersey stands to benefit from an estimated $1.4 billion in new economic activity, approximately 20,000 new jobs and $71.9 million in new state revenue over the next 20 years.

These benefits will reach beyond the immediate reach of the construction and operation of the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey, the first state funded facility of its kind in the country, and have a ripple effect throughout our economy.

This detailed report can be viewed here.

Acting Governor Richard J. He also gave the David Sarnoff Library a new blog page, just in time to promote a free lecture June 15 on "Five Princeton Inventions That Changed the World."

I quote.....
"Five Princeton Inventions that Changed the World"

What: an illustrated talk
When: Wednesday, June 15, 7:30 pm
Where: Sarnoff Corporation Auditorium, 201 Washington Road, Princeton (free)
Who: Alex Magoun, Ph.D., executive director of the David Sarnoff Library
Why: The Library's contribution to the CelebrateNJ! Festival in June

Color television, transistors, computers, video cameras, liquid crystal
displays (or LCDs) these technologies all shape how people live and
communicate around the world. They also share a common origin, here at
Princeton's RCA Laboratories. Guided by Alex Magoun, executive director of
the David Sarnoff Library and author of the Arcadia Books photohistory of the
Labs, take a tour of the stories of their invention and innovation, focusing
on the human factors that shaped their development at one uniquely innovative
company.

"Three generations of engineers and scientists have created a rich and unique
history of world-changing innovation that runs right into the present," says
Magoun. This talk skims the surface of a well of creativity matched only by
Thomas Edison. It may also connect you with your neighbor, or your neighbor's
parents, or grandparents.

"Five Princeton Inventions" offers a useful source of local history, and an
introduction to issues that innovators confront today. A condensation of Dr.
Magoun's popular Princeton Adult School class last fall, this illustrated
lecture offers the same mix of education with dashes of entertainment. Magoun
explains the roles that inventive styles, funding sources, corporate
priorities, inventors elsewhere, commercial rivalries, and government
involvement all have on the process by which inventors, entrepreneurs, and
consumers improve our lives.

Doors will open at 7 pm and visitors can see the inventions discussed in the
David Sarnoff Library before and after the lecture. Refreshments will be
served. Call (609) 734-2636 for more information, and visit davidsarnoff.org
for directions.

This lecture is made possible in part through a general operating support
grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, Department of State.
***

BusinessWeek Blogs, why don't you...

Just found that even the main stream media is actively using Blogs, such as BusinessWeek .
